TheColorGray is a blend of edgy, straight forward rock and positive energy. This “power trio” conveys clear messages with a powerful sound created by driving guitars, melodious vocals, and tight rhythms. Conversational, yet poetic, the lyrics speak of serious issues and feelings, without being excessively disturbed or artificially weighted. Through chance meetings, all three members banded together to form TheColorGray. Cason Clifton (drummer) first met Chris Hawkes (vocal/guitar) in the music dorm at The University of North Texas. Cason describes his spontaneous connection with Chris: “I heard him jamming with another drummer down the hall and I wanted to play! I stepped in and borrowed my neighbor’s kit.” Chris felt the chemistry too: “He came in and started laying down a beat and I was floored! His sound and ‘feel’ meshed so well with mine.” As strong as the bond was, both knew that they needed a third to accomplish the sound that they desired. After performing and recording for nearly a year with fill-in bassists, the duo found their final member in Jake Baxter (bass). Cason had asked Jake for help on an assignment while seated next to him in a class at UNT. During conversation, Cason mentioned his band’s need for a bassist. When Jake replied, “Cool….I play bass,” it was obvious that the duo would soon become a ‘power trio.’ Following a few weeks of practice together, the group started playing original material under the handed-down name of Redtag from Chris’s high school band. But after a year of performing, the group decided to rename themselves TheColorGray to mark the new maturity, direction and significance of their connection. TheColorGray is a name that describes an identity: a combination of the nuances of separate qualities, which all meet in the middle for a beautiful, blended result. The release of their full-length album “Control” was preceded with significant attention for the first album single entitled “Nothing To Lose”. It received spins on numerous radio stations including KTBZ “The Buzz” in Houston KLAQ "The Q" in El Paso KNCN "C101" in Corpus Christi KEYJ “Rock 108” Abilene and an official playlist add in their own major market home area on KDGE “The Edge” Dallas.
